Terms of Service
Effective
These terms cover your use of Handle at handle.pub, which OpenHandles runs. By claiming a handle or signing in, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use Handle.
Handle is in beta
Handle is early and changes often. Features can change or stop, and data can be lost. Handle is provided as is, without warranties of any kind.
Your handle and account
- You can claim a handle that is not taken and is not a reserved name.
- Use an email address you can read. Keep your password and recovery codes safe.
- You are responsible for what is done with your account.
- A handle is not property. OpenHandles can reserve, remove, or reassign a handle to stop impersonation or abuse, or to comply with the law.
Use of a claimed handle
A claimed handle is for genuine, ongoing use. Use it in good faith.
A handle that stays dormant, with no meaningful sign of use, may be reviewed. OpenHandles may close the account and later release the name, at its discretion and as the law allows. Signing in rarely, on its own, does not make a handle dormant. A handle kept for a real identity can stay in use with little activity.
OpenHandles may give notice and a chance to respond before it closes an account for lack of use. It may also make an exception. These terms set no inactivity period, no notice period, and no appeal process.
Claiming handles mainly to reserve or hoard names, without a real use for them, is discouraged. OpenHandles may address that under these terms.
One person may hold up to three personal handles. One personal handle is encouraged when one is enough. This maximum is for a person. It does not set a limit for a handle an organization uses.
What Handle shows
When Handle shows that a handle controls an account or resource, it shows control only. It does not prove who someone is, that they legally own it, or that they may act for another person or organization.
Acceptable use
Do not use Handle to:
- impersonate a person or organization to mislead others,
- claim handles in bulk, or to sell them,
- post a name, bio, or picture that is unlawful or that you have no right to use,
- break the law or the rights of others,
- attack, overload, or get around the limits of the service.
Your content
You keep your rights to the name, bio, and picture you add. You let OpenHandles store and show them so Handle works. A public profile can be seen by anyone.
Ending your use
You can stop using Handle at any time. OpenHandles can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.
Liability
As far as the law allows, OpenHandles is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost data, that comes from your use of Handle.
Changes
These terms can change. The effective date at the top shows when they last did. If you keep using Handle after a change, you accept the new terms.
